Setting up the Regions Control module can be a bit of a challenge the first time through. I hope this brief write up will help reduce your frustration about it:

The Regions Control module requires you to do three things:

  • Define what regions are enabled
  • Create new regions
  • Localize the module

First, you should only enable those regions you care about. By default, the world’s countries and continents are included. Disable all but those you want to use.

Second, you want to add any of the special "regions" you want to use in your classifieds board. In this example, I’m going to assume this classifieds site is going to cover the United States (so we need to add states only). You can use your imagination how to update this for your particular country or region.

First off, add all the regions you want to have in the "Add Regions" tab. One region per line. I put in a few states (Maine, New York, Florida, West Virginia). You need to add them with region parent of "USA" and of type "States/Towns". Obviously if you’re doing the whole US, you’ve got a lot to add here…

Next, you have to localize your top-level region (North America). Start by clicking on the Localize Module tab, check "North America" and then click continue.

Next you need to check the "Check box to enable sub regions for the primary areas of localization" and click continue. This brings up the list of areas for North America. I selected the "USA" one and then, click continue.

From here, you need to repeat that last step one more time to localize all your newly added regions (in my case, US states): "Check the "Check box to enable sub regions for the primary areas of localization" and click continue. This brings up the list of states for the USA. I selected the Select All checkbox. Click continue. Localization complete.

After you’ve done these, you can also add the regions to the Sidebar by clicking the green "+" icons in the region list. This will generate a list of regions that a user can filter ads with.

Now you have regions showing in your Place Ad list. That’s what "Localize" in this case means "make the classifieds board aware of these regions".

You have to do all these steps to create the regions and make them available to the AWPCP plugin. If you miss that last step, you won’t see anything.
