Hello. I was asked to do some work on a website that uses AWPCP. The previous Dev had done some customization to the AWPCP core and also custom CSS. Some coding worked and some didn’t.

One thing he did was additional PHP that by default selected a Category when a user went to a certain page to search inventory. For example when a user navigated to “Buy a Mustang” the “Vehicles” category was pre-selected, so only those search fields pertaining to Vehicles were visible. We had updated the core AWPCP plugin from3.8.1 to 3.8.3, so those customizations were lost. I had backed up the entire WP installation beforehand, so I was able to roll-back to 3.8.1 with the custom coding.

I am a white belt when it comes to PHP, so I pretty much  am groping blindly. I did find some of the custom PHP in the “page-search-ads.php” file. It contains:

private function search_listings( $form ) {

ID’s 413 & 13 reference to the Parts & Vehicles pages, while category 18 & 1 refer to the “Parts & Vehicles” categories.

I had initially tried inserting this into the same file in the new 3.8.3 installation, but it didn’t work. Probably because there is more custom coding somewhere else in the core AWPCP files.

My main concern is I want to update the AWPCP plugin, but can’t lose the custom references. I also don’t know what additional php is being called to accomplish these search parameters. So issue #1 is which files are involved in this search query, #2 is how to implement this coding possibly into the Child Theme environment so they aren’t lost upon plugin upgrade.

Is this possible?

I can provide url(s), admin and ftp credentials upon request if needed.

Hi ARSGeek,

Thank you for your question here. We are able to provide general guidance on customization items, but the specifics of resolving an issue like this are beyond the scope of support we can offer.

There are a few great outside resources to help you out here.

1) Tilden Tasks: They will also do longer WordPress tasks, but they break it down to 1 task per day.
2) Codeable, which has WordPress expert developers available for short-term projects:
